for Career Education (CE2) has been a successful
alternative to the regular high school program in the Coos Bay public
schools since 1980.
The program offers an exciting learning environment for students,
integrating classroom academics with on-the-job learning experiences in
the community. Students learn Basic Skills, Life Skills, and Career
Development by spending part of each day both in the classroom and on a
community-learning site. Classroom learning is self-paced, using
individualized curriculum. A Program with a Mission: The mission of CE2
is to provide a nurturing, personalized environment where students may
stay in school, learn the basic skills for living and working and
explore careers for the future. CE2 is successful because it fits the
curriculum to the student rather than the student to the curriculum.
Each student develops an Individual Academic and Career Plan with the
aid of his or her core teacher. The student progresses through this plan
at a pace dictated by needs, abilities, learning style, and goals set by
the program.
CE2 is performance-based, which means that students earn credits and
progress through the curriculum only by doing the work and meeting the
academic standards. Seat-time is not rewarded.
